The Causes of the Declining Nuptiality Rate in China

By Yining Zhou

As China’s Ministry of Civil Affairs published in the Nuptiality Report 2022, there is an evident decline in the percentage of the population getting married in 2022 compared to the previous year. The actual number of marriages in China has also reached its lowest point in the past two decades. This paper aims to examine the causes of the declining trend from a variety of perspectives, including imbalanced population structures, social stress of the young generation, and the refusal to recognize same-sex marriage legally.

Keywords: population structure, living stress, same-sex marriage.
